Were they on a break? That’s the immortal question that still divides Friends fans today.

Cast your minds back to 1998 to The One Where Ross Finds Out – that Rachel was his lobster, obviously – and you’d bought your hat ready for the wedding, until, almost as soon as they finally kissed, Ross and Rachel split.

Well, it turns out Friends writers actually had high hopes for the most on-off couple on television and they were never initially supposed to go on a break at all.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, executive producer and director Kevin S. Bright revealed why writers Marta Kauffman and David Crane changed their minds and decided to torture us all for 10 seasons before Rachel eventually got off the plane.

‘I would say initially when [Ross and Rachel] was planned it wasn’t planned that way, that came a little bit later,’ he told us.

‘It allowed us to have fun with the show and give people something to root for,’ he told us. ‘We were well aware the audience wanted to keep them together but everything that was keeping them apart – we realised when we got them together when the first kiss happened we go, “Wow, the air has kind of gone out of the balloon.” There wasn’t that sexual tension anymore.

‘I thought what Marta and David did, which was such a brilliant and brave move with their relationship, as soon as everyone got their wish the wish was taken away. It made it so much better when they did get together.’

Also, Bright confirmed actual talks for a Friends reunion officially took place last month – WE KNOW!

Bright is currently in London (Baby!) where Friendsfest has just landed in the UK capital, featuring classic sets plucked from Friends’ 10 series – including our personal favourite, the ‘PIVOT’ scene.

‘I really didn’t know what to expect but what I saw was a lot of people having a lot of fun,’ he fondly told us. ‘They’ve really done a great job so it was fantastic.’

He enthused: ‘Being with the fans – we had audiences of 500 people coming down while we were shooting and everyone was so supportive and enthusiastic.

‘I remember at one point when we were shooting and everyone outside was screaming and the officer said if you just go over and take a couple of pictures they’ll go away and it was amazing; they stayed true to their word.

‘We went over and took a couple of pictures and everyone was really polite, went away and we were able to finish the scene.’

Friends airs daily on Comedy Central.
